Hair Restoration and LED

Hair loss is a common side effect of aging and impacts many people across the world. But what if we told you, there was a way you could combat hair loss and stimulate hair growth? As discussed before, red LED light therapy has several benefits, but one that isn’t as commonly talked about is hair restoration. The red and near infrared wavelengths of LED light, trigger the growth of mitochondria in your cells. This allows your body to make more core energy to power itself. When energy if made more efficiently throughout the body, your body will improve physical function, speed up the healing process, and lower inflammation and pain. It also works to stimulate the dermal papilla cells which are key in the regulation of hair cycling and growth.

What causes hair loss

Many different factors can contribute to hair loss; the most common being genetics, stress, diet, or a side effect of medication. Here is a breakdown:

Cause

About the cause

Genetics

Hair loss is most often caused by a hereditary disorder, Androgenetic alopecia and it worsens with age. This condition can also be referred to as male-pattern and female-pattern baldness. In men, it appears as a receding hairline and bald spots, whereas in women, it can be seen as thinning hair along the crown of the head.

Hormonal changes

Hormonal changes caused by pregnancy, childbirth, menopause, and thyroid disorders are just a few of the factors that can cause permanent or temporary hair loss.

Medical conditions

Alopecia areata, an immune system ailment that causes patchy hair loss, scalp infections like ringworm, and trichotillomania, a hair-pulling disorder – all can cause hair loss

Medications or supplements

Certain prescription medications can have a side effect of hair loss. Usually, these medications are the ones prescribed for those with cancer, arthritis, depression, heart problems, gout, and high blood pressure

Radiation therapy

Hair tends to grow back differently than how it was before

Stress

Stress can cause the thinning of hair. This can especially happen months after a traumatic event or emotional shock. This form of hair loss is usually temporary.

Hairstyles and treatments

Excessive use of hair styles that pull your hair back tight can increase your chances of experiencing hair loss. This is called traction alopecia.

At the base of each hair follicle is a hair bulb that contains the papilla and matrix, and this is where your hair starts to develop. The hair shaft is made up of keratin, a protein that makes up our hair. When all these functions of the hair aren't working together properly, appropriate hair growth is impossible to achieve.

Who is affected by hair loss?

Hair loss can be short-term or long-term and is often a result of heredity, medical issues, or hormonal changes. It is a typical component of the aging process, and it affects both men and women. In short, almost anyone can experience hair loss at any time for a number of different reasons.

Red light for hair growth and baldness

LED red light therapy has been FDA cleared for treating male and female pattern hair loss. There is a substantial amount of research that supports the ability of red-light therapy to enforce hair growth. This type of hair growth therapy has no side effects or adverse effects and is a safe and effective option.

Light therapy can be used on its own to treat hair loss or can be paired with medication or topical prescriptions to optimize hair growth. Be sure to consult with your primary physician to determine if light therapy is an advisable option for you.
